You keep Dentrix Ascend — this is an add-on that connects through the Ascend API and writes into the same chart your team already opens, not a replacement for your practice management system.
The hygienist works the mouth normally and speaks each depth. Capture is hands-free on the same speech rail used for clinical note dictation, so there is no separate device to learn.
The captured depths are put on screen for the provider to review, so a misheard value can be corrected before the exam is written. You are reviewing a chart, not proofreading a transcript.
On approval, the perio exam and its probes are created or updated in Dentrix Ascend through the API, dated to the visit and filed against the provider field Ascend exposes. A perio chart PDF can be produced from the same exam for the patient or a referral.
Connection is through Henry Schein One's API Exchange over OAuth 2.0 — no direct database access, no data migration, no conversion, and no change to how anyone opens Ascend. We sign a BAA, and PHI is encrypted at the field level at rest.
No. Dentrix Ascend stays your practice management system and the perio exams land in it. This runs alongside Ascend through its API and adds a voice capture layer in the operatory — same chart, same schedule, same logins for your team.
No — it writes new exams, it does not import history. Reading perio charts back out is not something we support on the Ascend API, so prior exams stay in Ascend and are viewed there. What this adds is today's exam, captured by voice and written into the chart.
The provider's. Dentrix Ascend exposes a real provider field, and both the perio exam and the clinical note are filed against it, dated to the visit. Notes are structured from the dictation and go into the chart only after the provider approves them.
Dictation audio is never stored — it is held in memory only, never written to disk, S3, or a database. The transcript text from a dictation is kept for 24 hours so an interrupted dictation can be resumed, then discarded. Separate recording features that do retain audio exist, but they are opt-in and consent-gated; perio charting and note dictation are not among them.
Over OAuth 2.0 through Henry Schein One's API Exchange, the authorization path Ascend uses for approved vendors, with no direct database access. We sign a BAA and encrypt PHI at the field level at rest.
Clinical note dictation, insurance eligibility verification with coverage detail written back, intake forms including insurance card images, payment posting, treatment plans, AR, patient search and create/update, self-scheduling, and an AI receptionist that answers calls and books into the live Ascend schedule. Claims submission is available too, though it runs outside the PMS. The same Ascend connection covers them.
If you already run Dentrix Ascend, this is an add-on rather than a switch. The hygienist speaks the depths, the provider reviews them on screen, and the exam and its probes are written into Ascend through the API — against the provider field Ascend exposes, dated to the visit.

Your hygienist probes and speaks each depth out loud. Capture is hands-free, the provider reviews the depths before anything is filed, and the finished exam is written into Dentrix Ascend through the Ascend API — attributed to the provider, dated to the visit. No perio numbers to re-type after the patient leaves.
A 20-minute walkthrough using your schedule and your procedure codes. No switching, no migration, no rip-and-replace.
